Scaroni questions the need for Coppa Italia but says Milan have to win it

By Isak Möller - 10 January

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni spoke to SportMediaset in minutes before the kick-off against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on Tuesday and answered questions about the competition and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"Ibrahimovic opens doors for us," Scaroni said. "When he arrived, many sponsors came knocking on our door. I think he's happy to be here. He has found a family here and he's important for us because he helps us improve every day.

Scaroni also questioned the need for the Coppa Italia. "It's a competition that takes away a lot of energy and that, in my opinion, is not very useful," he said. "But since we're in it, we have to try to win it."

Milan are the record winners of the Coppa Italia, with 19 titles. They have not won the competition since 2003, however, and have lost in the final four times since then.

Scaroni's comments are likely to spark debate about the future of the Coppa Italia. The competition has been criticized in the past for being too long and for taking away from the league and European competitions.

However, the Coppa Italia remains a popular competition with fans and clubs alike. It is one of the few chances for smaller clubs to win a major trophy.
